What are multiple meaning words? Well, they are exactly what you might think! Words that sound the same and are spelled the same but have different meanings depending on the way they are used. Understanding multiple meaning words is an important skill in the development of a person's language processing skills. Look at the great visual below from The Whimsical World, Inc. You can see how the language skills build on each other. Understanding and using vocabulary at each step in the ladder is an important skill. Click on the Language Tips tab above to find additional resources on each of the language processing steps including multiple meanings.

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year. As I'm sure you have experienced, this year is off to an atypical start. Your child's speech/language pathologist has been working hard to try to schedule therapy sessions to work around all of their online learning.
You probably had a phone call from your child's SLP or special education teacher, notifying you about how virtual school and special education would look for your student. They discussed how virtual school, therapy and special education would look different than in person. What you can expect from the speech and language department is the following...
Parents are always sooo important in their child's progress and success during speech and language therapy. Now during virtual school, the SLP's will rely on your assistance even more. The assignments that will be posted are meant to be enrichment activities which will continue to improve their speech and language skills increasing their success towards their IEP goals. Please complete the activities/assignments that are provided to your student and this assignment will be the discussed at the beginning of the next therapy session. Your child's CANVAS platform should have a few "courses" listed. One course should be their speech/language class...possibly labeled "Mrs. ______'s Speech Class" or something similar. Within this class you should find a zoom link to their speech class - only to be clicked on when it's their time for speech. Also, there should be an assignment posted in the "assignments" tab. Several of the classroom teachers have said they will also post a link to the speech class zoom on the regular classroom teacher's home page. But if there is not a link in their class, you can always click out of the class and click on the speech teacher's class to find the link. Please bare with us during these first few weeks as we try to navigate through this virtual unknown. But do know, we are trying to get things ironed out as soon as we can. In the meantime, you can always check this website for additional resources or activities. They will be posted under the Virtual Speech/Language therapy tab along the top. Please email or call your child's therapist anytime. We have been asked by the district to limit calls to parents as to not overwhelm anyone - BUT - YOU CAN CONTACT US ANYTIME!! Hi Families, We are now on Week 7 of Distance learning. Many of you have settled into this new "normal" and have been working with your SLP either through email suggestions, phone calls and now many of you have been helping your children participate in Zoom therapy sessions. I know this isn't the ideal way to participate in speech/language therapy sessions but it does work in a pinch. A few pieces of information...our district has stated that the last day of school will be May 21 and the last day of new materials sent home will be May 15. May 15 will also be our last day of therapy services provided via zoom. If you have further questions regarding therapy and continuing to provide support for your child, please contact your student's SLP. All of the contact information for each building's SLP is provided under the "Introduction" tab in a subtab called "Contacts". We do not yet know what next school year brings for us, but we are planning to provide speech and language services in whatever way we can. In case you would like to look at the general lesson plans, they are posted here...
Hi Parents, We hope you are all adjusting well to these weeks of working from home. Please continue to reach out to your child's SLP with questions and concerns or happy moments! We love to hear about progress!! In this blog post, you will find links to the final weeks lesson plans for speech and language. Remember, these are guides to improving speech and language and may not always apply to your students weaknesses. Nevertheless, these activities are good extension activities for all kids. For specific activities that would target the specific goals in your child's IEP, you would need to speak directly to your child's SLP. Each week, you should receive some type of contact either through email, phone calls, texts, etc. You can request a zoom conference anytime!
Hi Parents! We are now into Week 4 of our distance learning. What an adventure! Here is the link to the Grandview Speech and Language Department's Speech and language lesson plans. You are welcome to do any or all activities listed in the lesson plan, but if you prefer, look for your child's age range and find the activity that is associated with the age. Be expecting a phone call or email from your child's therapist to check in, offer suggestions or answer questions. Several parents have requested zoom therapy sessions. If you are available for this type of service, please let your therapist know.
Hi Parents! I hope you are all doing well! If you are looking for additional activities to do with your child, I would encourage you to refer to our Language Tips tab at the top and click on the drop down "Language Activities to do at Home" tab. There are many, many suggested activities for you and your child. Again, please contact your child's SLP with ANY questions...we would love to hear from you!
Hi Parents, I hope you are beginning to adjust (somewhat) to the giant changes in your everyday life, especially with trying to help your child with the abundance of school work. I know teachers in our district are working very hard to provide good instruction to your children virtually. Each week, there should be new lessons and packets for your child to complete at home. As far as speech and language therapy goes, this is still something that we can offer your child. I know it can be overwhelming trying to keep up with everyone's schedule. The Grandview Speech/Language pathologists are committed to offering any instruction and answer any questions that you have. Each week, you should either receive an email from your SLP stating specific learning targets for the week or you can access the lesson plans here...
Please find the activity that is most appropriate for your child and try to complete this at home. Your SLP will be contacting you OR you can contact her for additional assistance. If you would like to schedule a virtual therapy session, please let your SLP know. These sessions are most commonly completed through Zoom so you will need to make sure you have downloaded zoom.us to your device (computer or phone or Ipad). Thanks for your help and please don't hesitate to contact your SLP for additional resources.
We are getting our weekly lessons uploaded to the Grandview C-4 website. Information for all classes including special education are in this website under COVID-19 Information. There are several clicks to get to the information for speech and language students. So hopefully this link will make it easier to access directly. Just click on this button for quick access to recommended speech and language resources.
