HOW TO USE A GRAPHIC ORGANIZER FOR VOCABULARY

Listening Comprehension Strategies:
Before Reading a Story Strategies:
- Get them interested in the story by previewing the text and pictures
- Activate their prior knowledge about the topic or main idea
- Make predictions about the story
- Introduce the vocabulary they will need to know or any new vocabulary
- provide visuals for vocabulary or story cards if necessary
During the Story Strategies:
- ask questions throughout the story to keep them actively listening and thinking
- stop and review what has happened so far
- check their predictions to see if you need to make new predictions
- encourage visualization the characters, the setting, and the events
- give the students opportunity to ask questions
After the Story Strategies:
- ask them to retell the story- use pictures if necessary
- discuss the sequence of events - use words like first, next, second, last, etc.
- Give student specific vocabulary he/she needs to use in explanation or retell
Vocabulary Development Strategies:
- provide visuals to help teach
- pair new vocabulary word with a synonym or similar word
- Use synonyms, antonyms, or categories to reinforce target vocabulary
- “Flexible” is similar to “bendable” or “easy to shape”.
- Give examples of other things that are flexible - a person, a rubber hose, play dough, etc.
